Electrical equipment in damp areas

14 October 2025

During recent industry show inspections, Caravan Industry Association of Australia’s RVMAP Team observed several instances where electrical outlets and switches were installed within the exclusion zone around damp areas, such as around showers, sinks and basins.

These locations present an increased safety risk if equipment is not installed in accordance with the relevant Australian Standards.

The placement of electrical equipment in these areas is covered under AS/NZS 3001.2:2022 – Electrical installations – Connectable electrical installations and supply arrangements; Part 2: Connectable electrical installations.

The standard specifies strict requirements for:

  • Showers and basins: Outlets and non-IP rated switches must be installed outside the designated risk zones.
  • External showers: No electrical fittings such as power outlets/inlets and switchboards are permitted within 600mm of the fixed plumbing connection.
  • Equipment selection: Only specific equipment types and IP-rated fittings are allowed within certain zones.

Incorrect placement of electrical devices within these areas can result in non-compliance and pose serious safety risks.
