Some approval types granted under the Road Vehicle Standards (RVS) laws are valid for five years and may be approaching their expiry dates. These include testing facility approvals and opted-in vehicle type approvals.
Once each approval expires, the approval holder will need to apply for a new approval.
Here are some important points regarding the approval process.
Eligibility to reapply
Holders of vehicle type and component type approvals can submit a new application up to six months before their current approval expires. Other approval holders, such as testing facilities, registered automotive workshops, and authorised vehicle verifiers, can reapply up to three months before expiration.
Application process
Applicants must create a new application in the ROVER System, providing all required information. Existing approvals cannot be extended. A new application must be submitted.
Retaining approval number
To retain the same approval number, applicants should include a request in the ‘Comments and any other matters’ section of their new application, specifying the existing approval number and the desire to retain it.
ADR applicability
If the new application is for the same vehicle model and the previous approval was not revoked, the vehicle will be treated as an existing model for the purposes of Australian Design Rule (ADR) applicability. This facilitates the continuous supply of vehicles of that type.
Commencement date
Applicants can specify a commencement date for the new approval. If no date is specified, the approval will commence on the later of the current approval’s expiry date or the date the Federal Department decides the new application.
Commencement levy
Certain approval holders, including testing facilities, registered automotive workshops, and authorised vehicle verifiers, must pay a commencement levy after their new approval is granted. The approval becomes in-force only after this payment is made.
